French Chemist Melouin discovered in 1742 that iron no longer rusted when dipped in molten zinc. By 1836 Frenchman Sorel patented the technology where iron objects were cleaned and subsequently dipped in molten zinc, later know as hot-dip galvanizing.
The Industrial revolution with its rails, bridges and steel constructions eagerly made use of the technology, quickly followed by the application of galvanizing other steel objects like machine parts, ship propellors and other objects.
Fast forward to the 21st century where the most commonly known applications of galvanized steel in the day to day lives of people are for instance guardrails and street lightning posts. In the ever urgent global need for sustainability, use and reuse of products, resources and recycling in production processes are essential.
VCD Recycling was established in 2024 as a merger between several European businesses active in the industry. With its incorporation, VCD Recycling combines expertise in the fields of hot-dip galvanizing, chemical process technology, international network and industrial trade flows.
Driving a circular economy – Transforming waste into valuable resources We recover, refine, and reintegrate industrial waste streams into the supply chain—preserving natural resources and enhancing our Clients’ industries
VCD Recycling has developed a process whereby the residual waste flows from hot-dip galvanization plants are processed, cleaned, and can be fed back into the core processes of the galvanization plants. Through this technology, the need to source virgin materials is eliminated from the businesses of our Clients.
VCD Recycling operates the plant at the Botlek, within the Port of Rotterdam region, one of the largest chemical clusters in Europe. The Port of Rotterdam is Europe’s largest seaport and serves as a gateway to the continent. The logistics network connects the site to the European hinterland with industrial areas, like Antwerp or the Ruhr region, via pipeline, rail, waterway and road. Integrating VCD Recycling into the wider European chemical industry.
VCD Recycling liaises directly with its VCD sister-companies to serve the European market, processing existing waste streams tolling-based, and producing recycled zinc-chloride solutions for industrial use.
Our team is a group of driven professionals committed to innovation, sustainability, and excellence in chemical processing. Their primary responsibility is ensuring the seamless operation of our processing plant while developing smart solutions that drive a circular economy. With expertise spanning business development, engineering, chemical technology, operations, and laboratory research, they work collaboratively to optimize efficiency and serve our Clients’ interests. We collaborate closely with our colleagues from our European VCD sister companies.
